Dog Microchips to be compulsory

Here at Sheriffs Highway Veterinary Group, we welcome the new law that has passed, making it compulsory to microchip all new puppies.

This will make it easier to track down irresponsible owners and reunite lost dogs.

The law means that all owners of new puppies will have to get their dogs microchipped by a suitably trained person.

The process of identichipping pets is by inserting a small microchip into the scruff of the neck of the dog via a small needle. The microchip itself holds a unique number which will be held in a database which can be accessed by the RSPCA, Police and veterinary surgeries.
Each microchip is registered to an owner, by their name, address and animal description.
The microchip will remain in the dog for life, they sometimes can migrate further down the body under the skin over the years due to body changes, but never causing any harm.
When a stray dog is found, it can be taken to most kennels, police stations and all veterinary practices where it can be scanned using a hand held device. The scanner will pick up any microchips and display the unique number. The database is then contacted and then the owners can be contacted.
It is important to keep all contact details up to date to ensure that owners are tracked down as soon as possible.

If you would like your dog microchipped it can be done at any of our branches for only £12.
